چکیده

[1] We use simultaneous global observations of the mid-latitude trough and the plasmapause to experimentally prove a long-standing conjecture of magnetosphereionosphere couplingnamely the mid-latitude trough and plasmapause are on the same field line. Global Ionospheric Maps (GIM), generated using ground based GPS receivers, are used to detect the globally extended mid-latitude trough; while global IMAGE EUV pictures are used to estimate the plasmapause position. Observations during the equinox and solstices and during quiet and disturbed periods are analyzed. In addition, positions of the mid-latitude trough are calculated using a simple empirical model. The two independent observations (mid-latitude trough and plasmapause positions) and an empirical model have been compared on a global scale and found to be in excellent agreement. Statistical analysis of the mid-latitude trough position during different categories of magnetic storms and different storm intensities

The ionospheric mid-latitude trough minimum position as a function of geomagnetic storm time is identified and investigated statistically in terms of the category and the intensity of storms. The data of ion density derived from DMSP and DEMETER satellites were used to extract the trough position. The variations of mid-latitude trough in 41 moderate magnetic storms and 88 intense magnetic storm...

The Role of the Plasmasphere in Radiation Belt

The plasmapause separates cold dense plasma in the inner magnetosphere from hot, low-density outer magnetosphere plasma. This boundary is very dynamic in response to changes in magnetospheric convection and other stormtime phenomena. The outer radiation belt is also dynamic during stormtime in terms of both radial location and energetic particle population. It is proposed that outer radiation b...

Identifying the plasmapause in IMAGE EUV data using IMAGE RPI in situ steep density gradients

[1] Remote sensing of the entire plasmasphere is routinely accomplished by the Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) imager on the IMAGE satellite. EUVobserves the helium distribution in the plasmasphere by detecting resonantly scattered solar 30.4-nm ultraviolet radiation. In EUV images the plasmapause is assumed to be the ‘‘ He edge,’’ i.e., the outermost sharp edge where the brightness of 30.4-nm He emi...

LHR band emissions at mid-latitude and their relationship to ionospheric ELF hiss and relativistic electrons

LHR band emissions observed at mid-latitude were investigated using data from the EXOS-C (Ohzora) satellite. A typical feature of the LHR band emissions is a continuous banded structure without burst-like and cut-off features whose center frequency decreases as the satellite moves to higher latitudes. A statistical analysis of the occurrence characteristics of the phenomena showed that midlatit...

Elevated Vancomycin Trough Concentration: Increased Efficacy and/or Toxicity?

Vancomycin susceptibility of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus has been changed over time and its average minimum inhibitory concentration increased from 1.5 to 1.75 mg/L. A recently published guideline by the American Society of Health Pharmacist recommended a daily dose of 15-20 mg/kg every 8 to 12 hours of vancomycin to achieve a trough concentration between 15-20 mg/L for treatmen...
